The 7 plants that actually survive a low-light apartment

Most plant-care advice was written for sunny windows and houses with yards. If you live in a 1-bed walkup with one north-facing window and you've already killed three pothos, this is the list for you.

We tested 23 houseplants in apartments with 4–6 hours of indirect light over six months. Seven thrived without babying. Here they are.

  1. ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)
  2. Tolerates the kind of neglect that kills most plants. Water every 2–3 weeks. Will survive a vacation.

2. Snake Plant (Sansevieria)

NASA studied this one for air filtration. Pothos-killer-proof. Water once a month.

3. Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)

If you've killed one, it's probably from overwatering, not under. Let it dry out between waterings. Trails beautifully off a shelf.

4. Cast Iron Plant (Aspidistra elatior)

Named for a reason. Survives near-zero light, irregular watering, drafty windows.

5. Echeveria succulent

Yes — succulents work in low-light apartments. The trick: don't overwater. Once every 2 weeks max. Tolerates indirect light far better than people think.

6. Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema)

Striking variegated leaves. Forgiving with water. Apartment-tested for years.

7. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)

The drama queen of low-light plants — but she'll tell you exactly when she's thirsty (the leaves droop, you water, they perk back up). Blooms white flowers. Filters indoor air.
